About New HYTEs
Launched in 2008 by the Yale varsity coaches and team members and with the financial support of an alumnus, New HYTEs is a program dedicated to providing educational support and tennis coaching to the youth of low-income families in New Haven. The program has gained national recognition through the USTA Foundation’s National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) network. In 2018, New HYTEs was honored as the National NJTL of the Year by Tennis Industry Magazine. Since its inception, the program has thrived through its strong ties with the Yale community, from the varsity players and coaches to the dedicated student and faculty volunteers, and to being the beneficiaries of Yale’s state of the art facilities.
Varsity Tennis Teams
On Monday afternoons throughout the school year, the varsity players and coaches volunteer their time to both teach tennis and to tutor New HYTEs students at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
Undergraduate and Graduate Student Volunteers
Numerous university undergraduate and graduate students serve as math tutors for New HYTEs students at Dwight Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school year.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors for New HYTEs includes a majority with Yale ties including professors, staff, varsity tennis alumni, and former head coaches.
Yale School of Management Non-Profit Board Fellows Club
New HYTEs has participated in the SOM Non-Profit Board Fellows Program since 2012. Each member serves for a year-and-a-half term and overlaps their last semester with a new board fellow.
The purpose of Nonprofit Board Fellows is to create opportunities for SOM students to serve on nonprofit boards in and around New Haven. The Club will recruit and screen nonprofits that can provide a worthwhile leadership opportunity for students and select students with a high motivation to serve on the boards. Nonprofit Board Fellows will provide training and support for students during the term of their service.
Office of New Haven Affairs
For more than a decade, Yale’s Office of New Haven Affairs has provided strong financial support to New HYTEs.
Dwight Hall
New HYTEs has expanded math tutoring to grades K-8, as part of the Mayor's $3 Million New Haven Tutoring Initiative. The tutoring sessions are held at Yale’s Dwight Hall. To date, all students have shown measurable progress in math aptitude and five students have received awards for their achievements in the citywide New Haven Mastery Challenge.
